hey, ya might wanna try GIMP for images. it's freeware, open source and has most of functions of fireworks... even has transparent layers thingy...
(GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program)
Just make sure to read the User Agreement because there's some fake versions hovering around out there and in the EULA it states that "you agree that we will be able to gather personal information..." It doesn't say this in the actual GIMP but there are fake versions that say this...
